Unclog Pipes Before They Crack or Burst

We all know that frozen pipes can crack or burst, causing big problems. But did you know that a clogged drain can cause a pipe to burst as well? Leaving a clog unattended can lead to increased pressure inside pipes, which can then crack or burst. This is a messy and often expensive problem that can cause significant damage to your plumbing and home. Luckily, most clogs are easy to deal with using just a few readily available materials.

Unblocking a Slow-Moving Drain

If you have a drain that is slow to empty, you have likely got a moderate clog somewhere in the pipes. These are the easiest types of clogs to fix.

Combine equal parts of baking soda and vinegar, and pour the mixture into the slow-moving drain. Leave it to sit for a few hours, and then flush the drain with fresh water. You should have a free-flowing drain.

Clearing a Clog Manually

More stubborn clogs may require a plunger or other manual removal method. A good quality plunger is an effective way to clear a clog from a tub or sink, so long as you get the proper suction. Place the plunger directly over the drain opening, and then fill the sink until the water just covers the plunger head.

This can be a pretty messy job, so it is a good idea to put some towels or newspaper down on the floor before you start plunging. Pump the plunger about ten times to build up pressure behind the clog; then pull up fast to get the plunger off the drain. You should hear a “pop,” and the water should drain from the basin.

If you have trouble getting a good seal, try coating the rim of the plunger with petroleum jelly. For dual sinks, plug the free-flowing drain with a washcloth or small hand towel first. Plunge the clogged side as described.

Using an Auger

For drains that are completely clogged and have not responded to plunging, you may need to try a drain and trap auger. This is a thin metal wire that snakes down the length of the clogged plumbing and grabs the clog; you can then pull the clog from the drain.

In a sink, just remove the strainer or grate cover over the sink’s drain and insert the auger directly into the pipe. Move the wire back and forth, turning the auger until you feel the clog.

Then simply retract the wire and dispose of the clog. If this doesn’t work and the drain is still clogged, you may need to remove the trap under the sink basin and use the auger further down the plumbing.

For bathtubs, you can usually manipulate the auger right from the tub drain. If that doesn’t work, try removing the cover on the overflow opening and sending the auger in that way.
